June 21 Column: Vegetable Garden Update

turnips, vegetable garden updateFor my column today, I thought it would be a good idea to give a vegetable garden update. I’m hoping it will be interesting and that you’ll pick up a couple of helpful tips. Here’s a link to it in today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: June’s deluges rotten for some garden vegetables.

I hope your garden is doing well so far. If you live in the Spokane area, some of your veggies might be looking a little sad due to all of the rain and crazy temperature fluctuations. But I really do feel we’re over the hump and that our plants should start growing by leaps and bounds. It sounds like other areas of the country as well as regions of Canada have been experiencing unusual spring weather, too. I hope your gardens start perking up now as well.

If you’re wondering which crop that is in the photo just above, those are ‘Silky Sweet’ turnips. I received a sample packet from Burpee and am really impressed with how well they’re growing and how quickly they’re bulbing up. And at the very top of this post, that’s a close-up of some of the potatoes we’re growing in containers. I’m excited to see flower buds because I’ll soon be able to sneak some new potatoes out of the pot!

In preparation for this week’s “Everyone Can Grow a Garden” video, I asked my Facebook followers if they had any questions about growing vegetables. Well, yes, they did! So this is my longest video ever (50 minutes)! I apologize for the length but I didn’t want to leave anyone out. Throughout the video, you will notice there are black screens with the name of the vegetable I’ll be answering questions about. So if you want to zip through it to either find the question you submitted or to the answers to questions about growing certain veggies, that’s one way to skip ahead.

OK, I hope you have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and that you’re comfy, because here it is!
