March 24 Column: Orchid Show and Sale

Orchid Show and SaleI think orchids are absolutely gorgeous. There are so many different types and colors that they’re hard to resist. In this week’s garden column, I write about the Spokane Orchid Society’s upcoming Orchid Show and Sale. Here is a link in today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: With orchids, knowing what not to do is a good starting point.

It will be held on March 30 and 31 in the Spokane Community College Lair, 1810 N. Greene St. Additional information about the show, as well as the Spokane Orchid Society itself, can be found on their website.

For my column, I interviewed SOS president Jim Pearce and publicity chair Alan Alexander. I decided to take an interesting approach to orchids by having them discuss all of the ways you can KILL an orchid! Yup, you read that right. Of course, the goal is to not kill your orchids but I believe this approach should help you be more successful in raising them. I hope you’ll find it interesting.

I’m happy to report that I was finally able to be outdoors for this week’s “Everyone Can Grow a Garden” video! We still have a lot of snow but it’s slowly melting and parts of my garden are starting to emerge.

So for this week’s video, I decided to cover how to prune raspberries and blackberries. As I explain, it’s not too early to undertake this task even though I had to wear my snow boots while doing it!
