Video: Powdery Mildew – What You Need to Know

Is this powdery mildew? You might think so but you’ll find out otherwise in my video!

From time to time, I plan to do videos that explain what to do for insect and disease problems. This week’s topic is powdery mildew. That’s a fungal disease that can wreak havoc with a lot of different types of veggies.

When it comes to vegetable plant diseases, at least there are ways to prevent it.

Powdery mildew is also relatively easy to diagnose. And to be honest, I’d much rather be dealing with that, rather than other fungal or bacterial diseases!

Here’s what you’ll learn in this video:

  • What powdery mildew looks like
  • Why this disease is a big deal for plants (spoiler alert: it impacts how they grow)
  • Which vegetable crops are more susceptible to this disease (see list below as well)
  • How some squash leaves can look like they have powdery mildew but it’s just how some varieties’ leaves look
  • How to prevent this fungal disease from occurring in your garden
  • And last but not least, ways to treat it if you do get powdery mildew on some plants

Yeah, that’s quite a bit of information but I was able to squeeze it all into 6 minutes and 46 seconds! Whew.

I also wanted to put the list of crops that can be affected by powdery mildew here. I know how it can be hard to absorb all that in the video!

  • Artichokes
  • Beets
  • Cabbage family crops (arugula, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, radishes, rutabagas and turnips).
  • Carrot family crops (carrots, parsnips)
  • Cucurbit family crops (cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, summer & winter squash)
  • Legumes (beans, peas)
  • Lettuce
  • Nightshade family crops (eggplants, peppers, potatoes, tomatillos, tomatoes)

OK, here’s the video:

If certain insects or plant diseases are troublesome for you, drop me an email at Susan@SusansintheGarden.com. I will do my best to help you out… and perhaps do a video on the topic.
