Video: Seed Starting #3

Yup, my newest video is on seed starting… again! But there’s so much information that I’ve been wanting to share with you which means I needed to shoot a third video on this very important topic.

In this video, I share information on seed treatments ( vernalization, stratification, and scarification) to help you grow things like artichokes or New Zealand spinach with the best results possible. But don’t worry, these different types of treatments apply to just a few types of seeds. Ordinarily, you’ll be able to just plant a seed as-is and that’s that!

You’ll notice that I used a photo of artichokes growing in last year’s garden as the cover photo for this video. In my region (zones 5/6), we have to grow them as annuals. If you don’t use the seed-starting tip I mentioned in this video, they won’t always be productive by rewarding you with artichokes to harvest. So there is some incentive for you to try vernalizing the seeds first! It’s so easy and — as you can see below — so worth it.

In the video, I also give a quick update on my winter sowing project and share tips on growing onions and leeks from seed. And at the end, I’ve got some cool announcements for you.

I hope these videos are helping you with your seed starting projects. Don’t forget that I’m always happy to answer your questions. Just send an email to Susan@SusansintheGarden.com.

OK, here’s the video:
