July 5 Column: Insects in the Vegetable Garden

ladybug, insects

Since there are a lot of brand-new vegetable gardeners out there this year, I thought it would be helpful to write a garden column about insects you might find in the vegetable garden and how to deal with them organically. You can read it in today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: Bugs with benefits.

In it, I discuss beneficial insects, aphids, slugs, cabbage worms, and earwigs. Yup, our gardens are a mix of good guys and bad guys, right?

I also wanted to mention that I have an Organic Pest Control guide on my website. It’s been a work-in-progress for a while — mainly due to my lack of so-called “free time” — but it does have a lot of helpful information that includes how deal with the problem pests organically. I hope you’ll check it out.

For this week’s video, I take you on a virtual tour of my vegetable garden. This is the second one of the season. My plan is to do a tour at least once a month so you can see how things are coming along. I hope you’ll enjoy it:
