Yum! These are ‘Monte Gusto Yellow’ beans.

This is a nice surprise for you and me both! I thought I’d have to wait 2 weeks before I could finish part 2 on how to grow pole beans. Apparently, the bean seeds I planted had other plans!

They really hit the ground running so they apparently were anxious to get out in the garden. Here’s what happened:

  • I planted the seeds on May 1st
  • The majority of the seeds germinated in a mere 4 days!
  • By May 6th, they started growing “true” leaves, which are their mature leaves

By that point, I realized I should start hardening-off the seedlings so they could be transplanted. Whew.

What’s the hardening-off process, you ask?

  • This means slowly acclimating the seedlings to the intensity of the sunlight outdoors
  • Indoors grow lights are nowhere near as intense as the sun’s rays. If I don’t acclimate the seedlings, they’ll get sunburned or even die. It’s as simple as that.
  • The hardening-off process takes about 7-10 days:
    • On day 1, you move them outside for an hour, in a shady location, then bring them back in
    • On day 2, you do this for 2 hours and bring them back inside
    • From days 3-7 (or 3-10), you increase their time outdoors by one hour. And, more importantly, you eventually move them into direct sunlight. But slow and sure wins the race, as the saying goes.

When you grow pole beans, however, you have to hit the ground running!

Despite what I just said, I did a shorter amount of hardening-off and got away with it. How? Under normal circumstances, seedlings live indoors for weeks before they’re ready to start going through the process. With the beans, they were only indoors for about 3 days because I knew things were going to move quickly. I think that allowed me to accelerate the process. I don’t ordinarily recommend doing this but I knew there wouldn’t be much time to act. Since pole beans send our vines, they would have been a tangled mess if I waited any longer!

What else is in part 2 of my video?

  • Preparing the seedlings for being planted
  • The tools I use to handle and plant the seedlings
  • Proper pole bean and bush bean spacing
  • An interesting tip about the direction vining plants lean
  • The actual planting process
  • Plant care
  • What to do with the amazing bean harvests you’ll be getting!
