Video: My 10 Favorite Flowers

While I’m primarily known for being an avid vegetable gardener, I have lots of favorite flowers that I always grow. I just love having bright colors in our landscape! And I love how they attract pollinators and birds. That’s such a great benefit.

So that is the topic for this week’s video. In it, I share my 10 favorite annuals and perennials that definitely play an important role in our garden.

Annual flowers grow, bloom, set seed and die in a single year. Perennials grow year after year, which is a wonderful attribute, right? As I go through the video, I cover the following:

• The common and Latin names of each of my favorite flowers
• Whether they are annuals or perennials
• Some of my favorite varieties
• If a plant is a perennial, I mention the hardiness zones they’ll grow in
• I also cover their light requirements. (note: in the video, I often say “part sun” since that’s usually how some plants are categorized. But I consider part sun and part shade to be essentially the same thing. Just wanted to clarify that.)
• You’ll also learn the average height for each plant. As you’re probably aware, that can vary based on the amount of sun and moisture they get. But at least it’s a basic guideline for planning purposes.

I’ve put lots of photos of these plants in my video. If I know the variety name, I’ve added it to the photos. Unfortunately, there are many that I don’t have a name for. That’s partly because I’ve had them so long, I’ve forgotten their names! Or I’ve seen different varieties that I don’t have while visiting other gardens. But these photos will give you some good ideas of ones to look for.

When it comes to annual plants, I start just about every one of them from seed. It’s so much more economical than buying seedlings at a garden center or nursery. But more than that, it gives me the opportunity to grow varieties that are hard to locate in stores.
