Video: Vegetable Plant Supports That Work Great!
This week’s video takes place in our vegetable garden and gets the new season under way! In the video, I discuss the importance of vegetable plant supports. While this might seem like a rather mundane topic, they make all the difference in how well plants grow.
So why are vegetable plant supports such a big deal?
- They help certain crops grow better
- Keeping plant foliage off the ground prevents/reduces the risk of soil pathogens spreading to the plant
- Supports make it easier for you to harvest your crops
- If you live in a windy area, supports protect the plants from getting knocked over
Over the years, we have come up with great vegetable plant supports for the crops that need extra help. As you’ll see in our garden, we have different types that are practical, reusable and just plain cool! These include:
- My “famous” pole bean arbor
- Our cattle panel arch for vining crops (think cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, tromboncino squash)
- A tomato support made with concrete-reinforcing mesh. It supports several tomato plants.
- A tomato cage made with leftover field fencing
- What I use to prevent our corn plants from being snapped off at the ground from high winds
- And last but not least, FREE plant stakes for peas, peppers, eggplants, etc.
I’m hoping you’ll find lots of ideas for vegetable plant supports you can use in your own garden.
