Video: I Goofed with Aphids!
This week’s video is going to be slightly different. The topic is aphids and the beneficial insects that prey upon them.
Perhaps you saw my YouTube “short” video about the huge population explosion of aphids in May 2024. I explained how I wasn’t going to worry about them because I knew beneficial insects would come to the rescue. Well, things didn’t exactly turn out the way I expected!
For this week’s video, I start by sharing that short video. You’ll notice how confident I was at the time, but I’d never experienced anything like this. In retrospect, that was kind of embarrassing! Then I discuss what really happened afterwards. (Spoiler alert: our lack of snow cover and bitterly cold temperatures wiped out the overwintering beneficial insects.)
About 3 weeks went by before I started seeing some predators of aphids. I sure felt helpless during that time period, to be honest. On a positive note, just about every beneficial insect loves eating those annoying insects! I just needed them to get back on track.
