Wondering what this beauty is? It’s an American cranberry bush!

It’s time for my next video and I have to say that it was a joy to shoot! Rather than talking about vegetables, I focused instead on flowering shrubs that add so much to landscape.

My goal was to inspire you to look into the options that will work for your hardiness zone. While I love growing perennial flowers as well, shrubs really anchor areas of your landscape. They come back year after year and often have additional attributes that will endear you to them.

Bill and I are avid birdwatchers. When we first bought our 5-acre property, there was only 1 Ponderosa pine growing on it. We needed to create a windbreak on the western side of our lot, so that’s where we started. But then we started looking into flowering shrubs that would attract all sorts of bird species.

Our goal was to find shrubs that would provide them with shelter from predators and/or the weather. We also wanted most of the shrubs to produce berries that would feed them. We’ve got a mix of both native and ornamental flowering shrubs. And boy, have they helped us achieve our goals!

The first part of this video is on these ornamental flowering shrubs:

  • Azalea
  • Calycanthus ‘Aphrodite’ sweetshrub
  • Hydrangea
  • Lilac
  • Peony, tree
  • Rhododendrons
  • Roses
  • Viburnums (both Koreanspice and Snowball)

Then I focus on the native shrubs we’re growing and why we chose them:

  • American cranberry bush
  • Golden currant
  • Red twig dogwood
  • Snowberry

The best times to plant shrubs are either in the early spring or fall. The latter timeframe is my preference. Why? The plants can settle in and become better established… and you might even get them for a great price!

Are you ready to see some awesome flowering shrubs? Here’s my video:

I also wanted to give you a direct link to my YouTube channel. And if you’re interested in specific types of gardening (i.e., edible, flower, pruning, seed-starting, etc.), here’s a link to all of my playlists. That way you can pick and choose what you’d like to watch!
