Video: Divide and Plant Herbaceous Peonies
You might not think it’s hard to divide and plant herbaceous peonies, but there’s actually a trick to it. I’ve gotten a lot of emails from gardeners over the years. The message is usually this: “I planted my peony a few years ago and it hasn’t bloomed since.” Or perhaps this: “I divided my peony (or a neighbor gave them some) and it won’t bloom for me.”
The problem is that nobody ever tells gardeners that the secret is to plant them at the correct depth!
And that’s why I decided to shoot this video. Here’s what I cover in it:
- The different types of peonies and how this video specifically refers to herbaceous peonies
- I’ll show you photos of some beautiful herbaceous types
- Fall is the time to divide peonies
- Make sure each plant “chunk” has at least 4 “eyes” on it (growth tips)
- The planting depth is the key to being rewarded with years and years of blooms
You’ll also learn about the weird thing that happened in my front flower bed! I grow all sorts of herbaceous peonies along the back edge of it. But somehow, a young peony plant popped up in a different area. I’m still baffled by that one. But that’s what prompted this video: I needed to carefully move that plant. AND plant it at the right depth.
Here’s my video on how to divide and plant herbaceous peonies:
I hope this video was illuminating. If you know you’ve planted your peony too deeply, this is the time of year to fix that. And it’s fun dividing them to make FREE plants! You can spread the love by sharing some chunks with friends or neighbors.
