Video: Tips for Planting Fall Bulbs

There are certain things we gardeners enjoy doing this time of year. And planting fall bulbs is right at the top of the list! That’s why I decided it would be a great topic for this week’s video.

The term “fall bulbs” can be a bit confusing, though. I’m specifically referring to the bulbs you plant in the fall that will start blooming the next spring. And there are so many amazing types that come in all sorts of wonderful colors.

Examples of these bulbs include:

• Alliums
• Anemones
• Camas lilies (Camassia)
• Crocuses
• Daffodils (Narcissus)
• Fritillaries
• Glory of the Snow (Chionodoxa)
• Hyacinths
• Iris, Dutch
• Lilies
• Siberian squill (Scilla siberica)
• Tulips… and much, much more!

If you just read through that list with a smile on your face, you are my kind of people! These bulbs add so much beauty and interest to our gardens. I just love them.

I always buy my bulbs from John Scheepers Beauty from Bulbs. But as I explain in the video, I don’t have any affiliate relationship with them. The one thing I didn’t think to put in this video was to share the bulbs I’ve just purchased. So if you’re curious, here’s what’s coming my way:

• Dutch iris ‘Picasso’
• Rock garden iris ‘Painted Lady’

Once you look at those online, you’ll see why I chose them! But I also wanted to mention that in recent years, I’ve started buying more unusual bulbs. Species tulips and rock garden irises are a great example of that. They are so reliable and really add a lot of interest to our garden beds. So I hope you’ll consider stepping outside of your comfort zone and routine! It’s always fun trying new things, right?
