Video: Landscape Redesign Pt. 2: Let’s Plant!
In last week’s video, I showed you my landscape redesign project. I discussed the history behind our back landscape and everything I wanted to change. In this week’s video, you’ll see the results of the clean-up phase of the project.
Then comes the best part: the new plants I bought for the bed! As I mentioned last time, fall is a great time to get fabulous deals on plants. Boy, did I find some dandy ones, too. I primarily bought heucheras, hostas and sedums. (If you look near the bottom of this post, you’ll see the specific plants in a chart.)
To be honest, the initial cleanup of this landscape bed was a doozy! Why?
- There were so many plants that had taken over the bed.
- Trying to dig up all of the roots was extremely challenging.
- Many were blocking the sprinklers, at the expense of the rest of the plants.
- It was also challenging deciding which plants just weren’t a good fit for the bed.
How did I select new plants? Here’s my criteria:
- You’ve heard the expression “Right plant, right place,” right? That meant choosing plants suited for the amount of light they’d be getting. And this landscape bed gets quite a mix of bright sun, partial sun, partial shade and full shade!
- I also wanted to make sure they wouldn’t grow too tall. As I planted everything in this video, I was continually checking their height and width.
- Of course, another one of my criteria was color, whether it came from flowers or foliage.
