W. Atlee Burpee Co. has been around quite a long time, but they have a lot of interesting products worth looking at. There’s also a $10 coupon off orders of $50 or more. The coupon is good until May 31, 2014 and the promo code is BTEN1. Here’s what I gleaned from their 2014 catalog:

Zahara ‘Sunburst’ zinnia seeds and plants _ Yup, this is my favorite zinnia these days and the ‘Sunburst’ cultivar is a real beauty.

‘El Gordo’ hybrid cantaloupe _ This seems amazing to me: the fruits weigh up to 15 lbs. yet they mature in 60-65 days. Since melons don’t grow all that great in the Inland Northwest, I think this one is worth trying.

‘Queen Red Lime’ zinnia _ Wow, these zinnia flowers are spectacular. Each has a slight greenish cast with wine-colored tinges throughout. They grow from 24 to 40″ in height and will spread from 8 to 14″. Definitely ranks high on my “cool” factor!

‘Solar Flare’ sunflower _ Another eyecatcher, the center of this sunflower is a deep brown-black and the petals are scarlet-red with golden tips. It will grow 5 to 6 feet tall.

‘Purple Dragon’ carrots _ Similar to ‘Purple Haze’, the carrots are purple on the outside and orange on the inside. It’s an heirloom variety and the carrots will grow 6 inches long. Said to be very sweet.

‘Tango’ hybrid celery _ You’ll recall I grew this variety of celery last year, just for fun. It grew really well and was very tasty, so here is a source for the seeds if you want to try them, too.

‘Baby’s Leaf’ hybrid spinach _ The leaves on this plant look attractive to me and it ripens in 30 to 40 days.

‘Italian Ice’ patio tomato _ I’ve seen and eaten ‘Italian Ice’ before. It’s a striking ivory color and delicious. It will mature in 65 days. The fruits are 1 to 1 1/2″ in diameter.

Mix & Match vegetable plants: this includes tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and herbs.
