July 22 column: Hibiscus
Here is a link to my column in today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: Hibiscus is in his heart. It is a profile of Bruce Bailey and his Heavy Petal Nursery, which is located just northeast of Moses Lake, Wash. He has a passion for a hardy hibiscus, or rose mallow, that will grow in zone 5 gardens and boy are they gorgeous.
An example of their beauty can be seen in the top photo. ‘Shake Rattle ‘n Roll’ is a cultivar that Bruce has bred. Isn’t it glorious? For a closer look at it, just click on the photo. The other photo was taken while visiting Bruce recently on a particularly hot day.
On this coming Friday and Saturday, he is going to host his annual “Hot for Hibiscus” event at the nursery. It will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Moses Lake is just a 90-minute drive from Spokane so I hope you’ll take this opportunity to go. For more information, visit www.heavypetalnursery.com.
