June 17 column: Berries
Here is a link to my column in today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: Blessed by berries. In it, I outline the culture of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries.
Just writing about it made my mouth water! It looks like we’re going to have a great strawberry harvest this year. The berries are about a week away from ripening and I can hardly wait to indulge in them morning, noon and night.
An interesting thing I recently learned from a Master Gardener friend is that raspberries like a slightly acidic soil. Not as acidic as blueberries require, but acidic nonetheless. My friend puts ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) on the soil around her raspberry canes and says they have been much healthier and more productive as a result.
