Ahhh, the time for the tomato harvest and subsequent canning season is finally upon us. As you can see, our first big picking of the ‘Italian Pompeii’ paste tomatoes was pretty decent.
My husband and I have just finished running them through a strainer to make a puree. It’s now heating up a big kettle that also contains minced garlic, chopped onions and peppers. We’ll add some spices once the puree is just about done.
I wanted to give you a feel for how well the tomato plants have been doing, which you can see in the second photo. I’m very impressed with ‘Italian Pompeii’ — the tomatoes are meaty, with very few seeds. And look at all of the tomatoes on the vines! One of our best years ever, which is quite a surprise considering what the growing conditions were like for the first half of the season.
Before I planted our tomato seedlings this year, I added a bunch of well-rotted leaves from some compost that wasn’t quite finished yet. It really seems to have made a big difference.
