Cantaloupes

Cantaloupes

Check out the little cantaloupes I grew! I put a quarter next to them so you could see just how little they are.

The cultivar is ‘Far North’ although I don’t think they were supposed to be quite this small. My melon patch has been pretty unproductive this year — something I’m attributing to our crazy spring and early summer weather. But I picked two of these melons yesterday and we just treated ourselves to them at breakfast. They were sweet and delicious.

I also planted ‘Prescott Fond Blanc’ which is a much larger melon that has a thick, bumpy rind. There are a few of those in the melon bed and I’m hoping they’ll be able to ripen before we have a killing frost.

Did you know that a melon is ripe and ready for picking when it starts pulling away from the vine it’s attached to?
