April 24 column: Planting Dahlias
Here is a link to my column from Sunday’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: For memorable dahlias, start around Memorial Day. It is all about planting dahlias and how to store the tubers over the winter. One thing that I didn’t have room for in my column was to mention Kay and Dan Loibl’s favorite method for storing their dahlias during the colder months.
They actually store each tuber in loosely-wrapped plastic wrap before placing them into a styrofoam cooler. They have had really good luck storing them this way although they also recommend the more traditional way of storing them inside a cooler, with vermiculite, peat moss, sand or sawdust shavings to keep the tubers from getting too damp or too dry.
