March 20 column: Soil
Here is a link to my column in today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: Try loosening soil rather than a complete turn over.
It is a discussion on the importance of taking good care of your soil in order to have a successful garden. This involves carefully loosening it with a tool like a spading fork or broadfork (What’s a broadfork? Click here to see) instead of completely turning it over; this protects its structure.
I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve done the latter for years – my heart may have been in the right place but it turns out it destroys the delicate structure and layering of the soil. Oops. It also involves adding organic materials to the soil so there are plenty of nutrients for each year’s garden.
