Moose in the garden

Sorry I haven’t been doing much blogging lately – my past couple of weeks have been awfully hectic. But this morning, we discovered that we had not one, but two moose in the yard. While they’re cool to watch up close, I can’t say as I’m all that thrilled they decided to pay us a visit!

As you can see by the photos, our visitors were a cow and calf moose. They started out in our front yard, munching on rose canes and a yew (one of their favorite foods). Then when we started talking to them from an upstairs window, they decided to push their way through some shrubs into our vegetable garden and then into the backyard.

The calf appears to be a young bull as he has antler “buds” on his head. He apparently thinks crabapples are a pretty tasty treat as he spent most of his time munching on them.

My husband Bill lobbed several large snowballs at them but those didn’t faze the moose in the least! We tried clapping our hands, shouting at them and so on, but nothing seemed to do the trick. I should mention that we know moose can be very dangerous and unpredictable – especially when a cow feels the need to protect her calf – so we kept a safe distance away. One of our neighbors was walking with his dog out to get their newspaper at the same time and didn’t see the moose initially. I shouted to him to be careful because I noticed the cow staring at him the whole time he walked by. She never moved or averted her gaze at him until our neighbor was quite a distance from her. Yikes.

I’m fearing we’re in for repeat visits which is stressing me out but at this time of year, there’s not a whole lot we can do to deter them. But come spring, we will be doing more fence-building because it’s mighty hard to garden with visitors like a moose family!

Hope you will enjoy the photos anyway.
