Aug. 8 column: Friends of Manito

Friends of Manito, Duncan Gardens
Here is a link to my column from today’s edition of The Spokesman-Review: Friends of Manito throw garden party.

It is about the 20th anniversary celebration that The Friends of Manito (TFM) will be hosting next Saturday (Aug. 14) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Spokane’s Manito Park. TFM is a volunteer group that raises funds to support projects within Manito Park.

This is a free event that will include garden tours conducted by WSU Master Gardeners, food, music, family activities and half-hour lectures on gardening topics held in the Manito meeting room just east of the Gaiser Conservatory.

I’ve been asked to give a talk on dealing with deer in the garden, which I am looking forward to doing. It will be from 12-12:30 p.m. so if that’s an issue that has been driving you crazy, be sure to join us.

Here is a copy of the lecture schedule:
10-10:30 – Drought irrigation (Penny Simonson)
10:30-11 – Heucheras (Tracy Lewis)
11-11:30 – Past and future Manito Park TFM-sponsored projects (Steve Nittolo and Taylor Bressler)
11:30-12 – Daylilies (Maralee Karwoski)
12-12:30 – Dealing with deer (Susan Mulvihill)
12:30-1 – Ornamental grasses (Milo Ball)
1-1:30 – Rose shrub care (Steve Smith)
1:30-2 – Fall and winter interest plants (Janis Saiki)
