If you have a serious case of ophidiophobia, or fear of snakes, I apologize for today’s photo. But rest assured the subject of the photo is just made of rubber and completely harmless, and it’s all for quail control.
We’ve been having a terrible time with the quail nibbling on our pea vines this spring so something had to be done. We decided to try placing rubber snakes in various locations on the pea trellis and around the raised bed the peas are growing in.
It has worked really well. Usually when we walk into the garden, quail are scurrying every which way to get out of there. But for the past few days, I haven’t seen any quail in our garden at all. And don’t get me wrong: I love quail and think they’re very cute. I do draw the line at sharing my veggies with them, however.
We’ve been moving the snakes around in the garden every so often, just so the quail won’t discover they are fake. We bought the snakes at a local dollar store so at least it’s been a cheap experiment. Hmmm – I wonder if they’ll keep the robins out of our strawberry patch?
